Harley Davidson Sportster, An American Classic

Sportster Iron by Harley DavidsonOne of the most iconic bikes of the Harley Davidson line-up is the Sportster.  Sportsters are a line of sporty styled Harley Davidson motorcycles that have been produced since 1957 and consequently is also the longest continuously made motorcycle by Harley Davidson. The first Sportster featured a 55 cubic inch, four-stroke engine and four-speed transmission, and was built as a comeback to the Japanese and British bikes that swamped the US market at the time.  The Sportster in turn replaced the Harley K flathead motorcycle. By the next year the H-D Sportster XLH was introduced, and consequently continued to evolve with years of performance upgrades. Up until 2007, the Sportster was recognized by its well-known peanut fuel tank. That year, the Sportster line switched from a carburetor to H-D’s Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. The Sportster was the last of the Harley line to make the switch.
